That’s a difficult question.

Taste I think.

Cause I wouldn’t want to be blind. To not be able to see people. Places. Trees.
And I wouldn’t want to not be able to hear. Because I like listening to music, and the trees the waves. And people.
I have to be able to feel, otherwise I wouldn’t be much use as a carpenter. You need to be able to feel the wood under your hands. Wouldn’t be of much use in bed either.

I guess I don’t really think about my sense of smell much, but when you’ve got a cold nothing tastes right and that’s because your nose is all blocked up. So losing smell would be losing taste as well. Better one than two, then.

Of course, eating is pretty dull when nothing taste like anything, but it is better than the other options.

Or sunsets. The woods at night. The stars. The animals in the moonlight. I'm with you on that one. That's something I couldn't just hold in my memory. I'd have to be able to see it again.

Clay nods.
He'd miss these things too. And he doesn't trust his memory any more.

Charlie gave Clay a little smile. It was enough to understand, maybe. "I'm Charlie," he offered eventually, along with his hand.

Clay shakes his hand, then spells his own name with a finger, holding up his left hand so Charlie can see it.

I'm Clay

He smiles.

Nice to meet you

"It's nice to meet you too. I ... well I know David," and that was offered up with a little apologetic smile because Charlie knew fine well the mess David was in these days. "I wanted to stop by, say hello. I've heard nothing but good things."

Clay looks a little taken a back, then he grins.

Why, thank you

He writes DAVID on his hand and lifts his eyebrows questioningly.

Do you know David well?

Charlie grinned back. Yeah, the stuff he'd heard was right. Clay was a nice guy, he could tell. "I know him well enough. We're not best mates or anything but we talk." He laughed softly, "I'm sorry for just barging in."

Clay waves his hand a little.

That's okay

He signs drinking, lifting his eyebrows.

Can I get you anything?

Charlie seems friendly enough.

(occ - eh, whoops *g*)

"Uhm ... just water if that's okay." Charlie lifted his t-shirt a little to show Clay the bandages around his side. "Doctors orders, I'm afriad." He could like Clay.

(ooc: lol, worry not *grin*)

Clay gets a beer for himself and a tall glass of water for Charlie. There's a pot of mint standing on the kitchen counter so he adds a sprig of that.

He returns, putting down the can and the glass, and points to Charlie's side.

What happened to you?

"Thank you," Charlie smiled, lifted the water then glanced to his side and back up to Clay. "I ... there's a war. My world. I got caught in the crossfire so to speak."

Clay winces, then puts a hand to his heart and bows his heart.

I'm sorry

He looks worriedly at Charlie.

Are you okay?

Charlie touched Clay's wrist gently. "I'm fine, don't worry." He set the glass back down and used both hands to peel the bandage back a bit so that Clay could see some of the raised red scar, sore looking and tender. "It was really bad for a while but it's almost finished healing now."

Clay wrinkled his nose. It must have hurt.

He took a sip of his beer and pointed out of the window, then to Charlie.

You're not from here?

Charlie tilted his head, thinking about that for a moment. "It depends on how you look at it." He smiled, taking a drink of the water in between. "I'm a wizard." That often sounded bizarre to people. "From this world just ... not from these parts, so to speak."

Clay lifted his eyebrows.

Oh

He put his head on one side and looked closer at Charlie.

Really. I'd have thought you'd have to be - older

Charlie chuckled. "We're born wizards. It's a magic inside us instead of, as common knowledge would dictate, something you need to learn." He sipped more of his water and looked around. "What do you do?"

(ooc: sounds great to me chickie, I'm having great fun :) )

Clay nods. That magic should be something in a person sounds sensible. Like Callie.

He smiles at Charlie and signs hammering, then draws a house in the air.

I am a carpenter.

He points to a small wooden bird caught in flight, resting on the kitchen counter.

And I make stuff like that.

Charlie's eyes widened and, setting the water down, he picked the bird up. Fingers gently mapped the details of it, turning it around in his hands. "Clay ... this is beautiful. It's really beautiful." Charlie's eyes, full of wonder, turned back to him. "How long have you done this for?"

Clay smiles. His ears feel warm. He always get a little shy when people praise what he does. It's just little pieces of scrap-wood. It's not like it's useful.

He stoops, holding one hand flat beside his knee.

Since I was a kid

There hadn't been much to do really.

"Clay, it's amazing." Charlie carefully put the bird back on the table with one more quick glance. "Have you got anything else I could see?" he looked around. Clay did amazing work. "Wish I could do that ... about all I'm good for is dragon keeping. S'not much of a talent."

Clay nods and then stares at Charlie. Wide-eyed.

Dragons?
Like real dragons?

Charlie grinned. "Yep, real live and kicking dragons." He snorted, shook his head, "I'm always so surprised at the way people from your world react to that. Guess it's not everyday you see a dragon, huh?"

Clay grins at Charlie, eyes sparkling.

Nope

He gets up to fetch a box. It's half-filled with little, wooden creatures. He hadn't realized he'd made so many. Hadn't realized how long he'd been here. He puts the box down in front of Charlie.

Go on. Have a look

Charlie's eyes widened. "Gods ... how long do they take you? To make them I mean." There was everything in the box and it was the kind of work that, everytime you took your eyes away and glanced back, a new detail shone at you. So beautiful. "Clay, if I had your talent I wouldn't be getting burned and battered on a daily basis."

Clay grins at him. Nor it's visible that he is blushing.

He shrugs.

It's nothing special

Charlie's eyes widened. "You don't think this is anything special?" he gaped. It was true, if he could do this then he might not be keeping dragons. "Clay ... only a handful of people could do work like this."

Clay wrinkled his nose.

It's not really good for anything, is it?

Clay looks at Charlie. Then he smiles.

You're right

He picks up the box and holds it toward Charlie, offering it.

Charlie blinked and looked at the box. "Clay ... I couldn't. You could make serious money from this little collection." He smiled at the little animals. "You should keep them."

Clay shakes his head slowly. You can't keep things anyway. Not in the end.

He points to the box.

I just stash them there anyway. Go on.

Charlie looked back at the box and a soft look took him over. "Thank you ... they'll go to good homes, believe me." He fingered a little squirrel. "You should come see me some time. I'm always kicking about. If you need to talk or ..." he shrugged a little, "I'm here."

Clay gives him a small smile. He'd like that.

Charlie seems friendly. Kind.
