Clay isn’t certain whether David has already left for Rome. He doesn’t think so. He is fairly certain that David would come round to say goodbye. Or call.

He walks over to Allan’s house on his way to the diner. He could use some reassurence before going to try and talk with Callie but David doesn’t seem to be in. He writes a note to him and leaves it there.

Hi David

I met Callie’s friend. Walker says it’s somebody you might know. His name is Alexander except it sounds a little stupiddifferent.

I don’t trust him.

Will Callie be all right you think?

I should go apologize to her. I sort of yelled at him.

~Clay

David has to read the note three times before the words register. Callie and Alex? The thought makes him slightly sick and he is not even sure why.

He takes the car without asking. He could ask, but Alan would want to know where he was going. Alan would see that something was wrong and he would want an explanation. He wouldn't push for one. But he would ask. And David would rather that he wouldn't ask.

So he takes the car and drives to Clay's. He knocks on the door. No answer. So he sits in the car and waits. Nothing seems as bad inside the car.

Halfway to the diner Clay did loose his nerve. He walked aimlessly for a while, trying to decide how to greet Callie. How could such a small thing suddenly be a problem?

He's returning now and recognizes the car in the driveway. He smiles and walks over to tap on the window.

David gets out of the car straight away. "I got your note."

Clay nods. He figured that was why David was here. It worries him a little.

David leans on the car. "Well, what the fuck is going on, Clay?" His words sound more harsh than he intends. The thought of Callie with Krycek makes him feel ill. Callie is for Clay. Clay loves her. Krycek has no rights with this.

Clay looks confused. He can tell that David is genuinely upset. But he can't for the life of him figure out why.
Unless this Alexander is a really good friend. But still...

Clay shrugs. A bit helplessly.

I just wanted to know a little about that guy. If you do know him?

"Maybe you should tell me what happened. And what the hell is going on."

Clay does so, looking distinctly uncomfortable.

Callie came round and - I was sleeping in Orlando's bed room. She got upset and this guy - Alexander - had taken her here and he -

He still doesn't know if this is one of David's friends but he cannot keep completely calm when telling about it.

And he - he acted like he had to protect her from me. And pushed me away. And -

she let him. But he can't bear to say that.

And he mocked me. When she wasn't looking. So I spat at him.

He shrugs a little. Looks away.

First things first.

"Why were you sleeping in Orlando's room?"

Clay gave him a blank look.

Why do you think I was sleeping in Orlando's room?

Then, less irritated.

I was - lonely - I guess.

"I'm lonely too, but you don't see me -" Then he stops, because David is forced to remember that he has done what Clay has, and with someone far worse than Orlando.

He bites his lip. "What's this about Callie and some guy? Why would I know him?"

Clay tells him that he had mentioned it to Walker and that Walker had told him it sounded like a guy he had seen with David.

And that Callie had said she'd met somebody and he figured it was this guy. Because of the way he had been - touching her.

He can feel his jaw clench.

"Walker??? How the fuck would --" But it isn't important how Walker knows. David can feel a flush to his face. He wonders how many others know.

Clay can tell that David is truly upset by this. He's got no idea why.

Is he - will she be safe with him?

It's not a good way to phrase it and he knows that David will be able to tell that he doesn't like this friend of his much but saying what he really thinks will be far worse.

"Let's go inside." David motions towards the house.

Clay nods and they go inside. He starts making coffee, mainly to have something to do with his hands.

The fairy carving is on the table.

David doesn't even see the carving. He is so lost in his thoughts. He is grateful for the coffee Clay hands him. It gives him something to hold, to prevent the fidgeting and to warm his hands that have turned ice cold.

"This Alexander, Clay." David pauses for a while before continuing, "Can you describe him? What did he look like?"

Clay describes the man, down to the look on his face when Callie looked away and he'd blown a kiss at Clay.

He adds that he had met him before. At Jason's.

He looked at me as if I were dinner.

Right. So it is Alex. And Callie is his woman. Fucking wonderful.

David rubs his face. "I'll speak to Callie." The less Clay knows the better.

He is really worried now.

"Listen to me. Okay, Stinky?" David drinks his coffee. "Alex is a very bad man."

He starts to laugh then. Because it sounds so fucking funny.

"He is a very bad, bad man. Stay away from him. I'll talk to Callie."

Clay shakes his head.

No. It won't do any good.

He sighs, rubbing his face.

She won't listen David.

She won't. Not if she likes him. She won't care if he is bad. Darkly was.

David stares at him. "Alex is a rapist and murderer. She can't defend that. Listen to me, Clay. That man has threatened my mother and Alan, do you understand that. He is dangerous. No dramatics, no bullshit. Dangerous. If she is the sort of woman who finds that sort of thing... appealling. Then so be it. She isn't half the woman you painted her to be."
