Work

I've been working a lot lately. It's okay. That way I'm sure I can sleep at night. No sense in staying awake thinking about things I cannot change.

I've been making a kennel for David and Alan's dog. David calls it Toto now. That's good. I didn't like he called it Dog. It reminded me of Ma.

Now he wants me to make a chicken coop. I'm not to tell Alan but I don't really see how Alan can avoid noticing if there's suddenly a lot of chickens in his backyard. Seeing as how they are noisy. And smell a bit.

Callie haven't been back. I miss her.

Jimmy's been in an accident so I am looking after Julie for a while. And Darth Maul has stopped trying to choke me to death when I sleep. Now she just tries to trip me up when I have to take a piss at night.

She's really clever though. And she hasn't ruined the plants Callie gave me. I water them everyday. If they stay alive she'll come back to me.

Thank you for looking after Julie. Jimmy's better, a little, and as soon as I can take some time, I'm taking you out for dinner to thank you. If there's anything you need at my house, help yourself to it. There are probably some things in the refrigerator that should be eaten, because I'm not around.

Miss you and thank you.

Anytime Orlando. You know that.

Hey, Clay - you know what they say about too much work... I'm goin' fishin' today - fancy joining me and cooking it down on the beach?

[identity profile] mute-clay.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd like that.

Thanks.

[identity profile] peter-weps-ince.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Weps smiles and strokes Clay's arm.
"So... how're you doing?"

[identity profile] mute-clay.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
A small shrug.

I'm doing okay.

He looks a little unkept, stubbled and tired but his smile is warm enough.

It's nice having something to do again. I've missed working.

How are you?

[identity profile] peter-weps-ince.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm settling back in - things are good." He smiles and looks closely at Clay.

"You look sad underneath that smile..."

[identity profile] mute-clay.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Clay shrugs again.

No sense in getting worked up about things being the way they are.

He scratches his chin.

I miss my old uncomplicated life. But I'm okay. Now.

[identity profile] peter-weps-ince.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Sorry... don't mean to stir things up - just concerned about my friend... that's all."

Weps picks up his rods and tackle.

"And I miss how we were before..."

[identity profile] mute-clay.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Clay gets comfortable and grins at Weps. Which parts of it?

The weather is nice. He doesn't have to be anywhere. Do anything. Life is fairly good.

[identity profile] peter-weps-ince.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Weps grins back and gives Clay a friendly shove in the arm.

"You know which parts I mean..."

[identity profile] mute-clay.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
My sparkly conversation?

Clay grins at him. Then his smile turns warm and quiet.

Yeah, miss that too.

Not Toto. That name is just a bit too hokey. What about Augustus?

[identity profile] davidshaw.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
*shrugs*

I don't think Dog cares much.

[identity profile] mute-clay.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's just - reminds me of my Ma is all. She had a dog named Dog.

[identity profile] wild-callie.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Hello Clay," Callie's voice on the phone sounds a little quieter than her usual. "Just wanted to know how you were. Wanted to hear your voice. And also, if I can come visiting in a couple of days?"

[identity profile] mute-clay.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Clay answers by whistling, small snippets of birdsong. Then he clicks, questioningly.

Are you okay?

[identity profile] wild-callie.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm...fine." Callie never lied to Clay, and she's not starting now. "I'm a little worried and I'm not sleeping well, so maybe I'd better sleep on the sofa.." she tries a smile, hoping that Clay will 'hear' it in her voice.

[identity profile] mute-clay.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Clay clicks at her again.

No, don't be silly. You'll sleep with me.

And then softly, bluebird song.

I miss you. I love you. Come soon.

[identity profile] wild-callie.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
It does warm her heart, that he is still opening his door to her, still welcoming her, and right now, though she was expecting it, Clay not asking questions is soothing and comforting.

She sighs and listens, closing her eyes. "I'll be there soon. I love you too. SO much. I love the bluebird song...sing it again for me, please?"

[identity profile] mute-clay.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Clay gets comfortable in the windowsill, whistling to her. Bluebirds and nightingales and very other bird imaginable. Then he moves on to songs they heard on the radio. In between he smokes and drinks from his beer, the sounds traveling all the way to wherever Callie is. He doesn't speculate about it. Better not to.

[identity profile] wild-callie.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
Callie closes her eyes again, holding the phone speaker to her ear. In the midst of the storm and the worry, Clay's is a safe island. He's always been.

Callie can't help feeling selfish. And it's not a good feeling. But Clay's songs reach her heart and she's grateful for how much love they bring with them.

So she stays on the phone, murmuring softly now and then, listening, for what seems liek hours, and maybe it is.

[identity profile] mute-clay.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
In the end he grows hoarse. He clears his throat and waits for her to say goodnight. He'll have to get up in three hours. But if she wants him to stay up and keep her company - even if they are only connected by air and cables - he will.

[identity profile] wild-callie.livejournal.com 2004-07-01 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
"I love you," Callie whispers in the phone speaker. She hasn't slept more than two, three hours per night, but the time Clay has given her, and the songs, it's better than sleeping.

"I love you, Clay. Sleep now. Thank you." She wishes she could hug him, rest her head on his chest, hear him breathing deeply and regularly as he does when he sleeps. "Thank you, my love," she whispers again.
